For anyone who finds joy in all things feline, the Nyanko Expo offers a playful, art-filled escape into Japan’s thriving handmade culture. Thanks to TV Osaka, this lively gathering brings together a vibrant community of artists, designers, and fans of all things cat, shaping one of Kansai’s quirkiest happenings.

Handmade Creations and Cat-Themed Delights

Originally spun off from TV Osaka’s handmade market series, the Nyanko Expo keeps its indie spirit intact—this time with a clear love of all things feline. The Japanese word “Nyanko” is a playful term for a kitty cat, often used to describe something cute, soft, or affectionately cat-like.

What makes it even more special is the chance to meet the makers themselves. Visitors can browse an eclectic mix of goods, from accessories and ceramics to illustrated prints, textiles, and even cat-inspired sweets. Each booth has its own personality. As you move through the space, it looks like a curated gallery, with each piece reimagining cats as motif or companion. For more information about the shops participating every year, go to the event’s shop list.

While many come in search of items for their pets—such as collars, toys, and lifestyle goods—the appeal extends well beyond cat owners. The Nyanko Expo sits at the intersection of craft culture and contemporary Japanese aesthetics, making it just as engaging for casual visitors and design enthusiasts. There’s also a wide array of interactive workshops and demonstrations, where attendees can try their hand at crafting their own cat-themed accessories or learn new artistic techniques from experienced creators.

One highlight of the annual event is the hands-on crafting workshops, which are suitable for both adults and children and popular enough that advance reservation is recommended. Notable yearly workshops include the JPBCA session, where you can make a cat out of paper strips by assembling the head and kit parts (open to elementary school students) and the Styling Jewelry booth, which offers sparkling reusable glitter cat stickers and lightweight brooches. For more information about the annual workshops, go to the event’s workshop list.

The expo takes place annually at the Knowledge Capital Congress Convention Center in Grand Front Osaka. The venue is on a busy street in the Umeda district, making it a great addition to your Osaka itinerary.
