The Ohashi House, an old samurai residence, sits at the edge of Kurashiki's Bikan historical district. Dating from the end of the 18th century, the srawling wooden building has been carefully restored. Tiptoe across the house's tatami mat floors to visit the various living areas, nearly all of which look out onto carefully-landscaped gardens. The house is peppered with old antiques, giving a flavor of the lifestyle of its former inhabitants. If you visit, you'll need to listen to a short tape recorded explanation of the house's history (available in both English and Japanese) before being allowed to wander the house and grounds at your leisure. There is also a small museum on site.
