The town of Chiran, surrounded on all sides by tea fields, has managed to retain much of its historical character over the years. The town's samurai district is compromised of sandy streets, Edo-era residences and beautiful dry landscape gardens. Seven properties are open to the public, all of which can be visited on one admission ticket (¥500). Spring is a fine time to visit, when the gardens' many azalea bushes lend a spark of color to the scene.
