The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is a scenic mountain crossing in the Northern Alps. Spanning between Toyama City in Toyama Prefecture and Omachi Town in Nagano Prefecture, the route can be traversed from either ends using various modes of transport. Be prepared to take about 6 hours to traverse the route one way.

The alpine route offers vastly different sceneries across seasons. When I went in April, the mountains were capped with snow. In autumn, the landscape evolves into a vibrant scene filled with autumnal colours.

Do note that the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine is closed during winter. In 2016, the full route between Dentetsu Toyama and Shinano Omachi will be open from 16 April to 30 November in 2016.

The highlight of Murodo is the Snow Corridor, made of snow walls towering at 20m. A short passage is open to pedestrians from April to June. (Photo: YX Koh)
