Inoichi Bon Odori 2025

If you're in Tokyo in early August and looking for something a little different, consider heading to Ueno Park for the Inoichi Bon Odori. Held over three days at Hakamagoshi Square, this lively event blends tradition, youth energy, and community spirit in one of Tokyo’s most culturally diverse neighborhoods.

Unlike your typical Bon Odori, Inoichi is a collaborative effort between the Ueno Nakadori Shopping Street and local student groups. Supported by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s initiative to revitalize shopping districts, the event is designed to connect Ueno’s two distinct cultural worlds: the refined side of museums and shrines, and the bustling atmosphere of downtown streets like Ameyoko.

Festivalgoers can expect a full day of activity, with food and craft tents opening at noon and running until 9 pm. Student-led performances kick off on stage from 4 pm to 7 pm, showcasing everything from dance and stand-up comedy to magic acts. The Bon Odori dance starts at 7 pm and welcomes everyone to join in. Designed with accessibility in mind, it includes English support and a mix of traditional and modern music.

The festival’s tower, built by students from Tokyo University of the Arts, serves as a symbol of connection between cultures, generations, and traditions. There’s even a special finale on the last evening to celebrate the spirit of togetherness that defines this event.
