If you’re planning a journey through Japan’s northern regions, the JR Tohoku-South Hokkaido Rail Pass offers one of the most flexible and cost-effective ways to travel.

Covering a vast stretch from the Kanto region up through Tohoku and across the sea to southern Hokkaido, this pass is designed for travelers who want to experience multiple destinations without worrying about individual ticket costs.

With six days of consecutive, unlimited rides, you can board high-speed Shinkansen trains, regional lines, and select private railways, all with a single ticket. From chasing cherry blossoms in Aomori and exploring historic temples in Nikko to wandering Hakodate’s famous canals further north, this pass connects it all with ease.

The JR Tohoku-South Hokkaido Rail Pass

The JR Tohoku-South Hokkaido Rail Pass provides extensive coverage across eastern and northern Japan, making it one of the most versatile regional rail passes available.

What’s included?

  • All JR East train lines, including local, rapid, and limited express services
  • The Hokkaido Shinkansen between Tokyo and Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto
  • Key JR Hokkaido routes in southern Hokkaido (including Hakodate and surrounding areas)
  • Aoimori Railway services
  • Iwate Galaxy Railway (IGR) lines
  • Tokyo Monorail to and from Haneda Airport
  • Sendai Airport Access Line
  • Limited express trains serving Nikko and Kinugawa (ordinary reserved seats)
  • Select sections of Tobu Railway (between Shimo-imaichi and Tobu-Nikko/Kinugawa-Onsen)

This wide-ranging coverage means you can travel from the capital to northern Honshu and beyond without needing separate tickets for most routes.

In addition to transportation, the pass can also unlock discounts at certain attractions, retail stores, and rental services across the region, adding extra value beyond train travel.

What’s not included?

  • The Tokaido Shinkansen (Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka route)
  • The South Hokkaido Railway Company line
  • Premium seating, such as Green Car or GranClass (available with an additional fee)

Prices

  • Adults (12+): ¥32,000
  • Children (6–11): ¥16,000

Children under six can travel for free if they do not require their own reserved seat.

When compared to standard fares, the value becomes clear quickly. A round-trip Shinkansen journey between Tokyo and Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto alone can exceed the cost of the pass.

Add even a single stop—like Sendai or Aomori—and you’re already saving money.

Pass validity

The JR Tohoku-South Hokkaido Rail Pass is valid for six consecutive days, starting from a date you select.

Each day is counted as a calendar day rather than a 24-hour period, so it’s important to activate your pass early in the day to maximize usage. For example, starting your pass in the evening will still count as a full day.

You can only use one pass at a time, and overlapping validity periods are not permitted.

Do I need the JR Tohoku-South Hokkaido Rail Pass?

This pass is particularly useful for travelers planning a multi-stop itinerary through northern Japan. If your trip includes several destinations between Tokyo and Hokkaido, it can significantly reduce transportation costs while simplifying logistics.

The pass is ideal for:

  • Travelers heading from Tokyo to Hakodate with stops along the way
  • Multi-city itineraries across Tohoku (Sendai, Morioka, Aomori, Akita, etc.)
  • Visitors who want flexibility to explore without booking separate tickets
  • Rail enthusiasts eager to experience multiple Shinkansen routes

Less suitable for:

  • Trips confined to Tokyo or nearby
  • Travelers heading west toward Kyoto, Osaka, or Hiroshima
  • Those planning only one or two long-distance journeys

If your plans are limited in scope, a point-to-point ticket or a different regional pass may be more economical.

How to purchase?

The JR Tohoku-South Hokkaido Rail Pass is available exclusively to short-term visitors to Japan.

You can purchase it through:

  • Official JR East online platforms
  • Authorized travel agencies such as Klook or KKday
  • Selected ticket counters after arriving in Japan

To collect your pass, you’ll need to present your passport with a valid temporary visitor stamp.

Seat reservations for Shinkansen and limited express trains can be made at no additional cost, either when you collect the pass or later at ticket machines and JR ticket offices.

Usage

Using the pass is straightforward, even for first-time visitors to Japan.

  • Present the pass at staffed ticket gates when entering or exiting stations
  • Show it to the train staff when requested
  • Reserve seats in advance for long-distance or busy routes

While reservations aren’t mandatory for most trains, they’re strongly recommended for Shinkansen travel, especially during peak seasons such as Golden Week, Obon, and New Year holidays.
